Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month: Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future

Each June, communities across the United States celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the remarkable contributions Caribbean people have made to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our nation. From music and literature to science, business, and public service, Caribbean immigrants and their descendants have enriched American society while preserving vibrant traditions that continue to inspire future generations. This month serves as an opportunity to reflect on those contributions, share our stories, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our communities.

At the Jamaican Heritage & Reggae Museum (JHRM), Caribbean Heritage Month represents more than a celebration, it embodies our mission. We are committed to preserving the history, culture, and legacy of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean through education, exhibits, community engagement, and cultural programming. As we work toward establishing a permanent museum home in Wilmington, Delaware, we are creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn about the Caribbean’s influence on the world and the enduring impact of its people.

To commemorate this important month, JHRM is proud to partner with the Wilmington Library to present a special Caribbean Heritage Month Pop-Up Exhibit throughout June. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore displays highlighting Caribbean history, cultural icons, music, national symbols, and significant contributions made by Caribbean communities. Whether you have Caribbean roots or simply want to learn more about the region’s rich heritage, this exhibit offers an engaging and educational experience for all ages. Guests are encouraged to take photos, share their experience on social media, and enter for a chance to win exclusive JHRM merchandise.

This exhibit is also a glimpse into the future of the museum. Our vision extends beyond exhibits and artifacts. We seek to build a community-centered institution that preserves cultural stories, supports educational initiatives, promotes historical awareness, and provides opportunities for meaningful dialogue and engagement. Through future workshops, youth programs, cultural celebrations, and community partnerships, JHRM will serve as a lasting resource for Delaware and the broader Caribbean Diaspora.

As our organization continues to grow, we invite the community to become part of this exciting journey. We are actively seeking volunteers who are passionate about culture, history, education, event planning, community outreach, and nonprofit development. Whether you can volunteer a few hours each month or support us at special events, your time and talents can help bring this vision to life. Together, we can preserve our heritage, celebrate our culture, and ensure that future generations understand the stories, achievements, and contributions that make the Caribbean experience so unique. Visit our exhibit this June, follow our progress, and consider joining the movement as a volunteer, member, or supporter.
